The National Park of Les Ecrins is one of the ten french national park also like La Vanoise, Port-Cros, Pyrénées, Cévennes, Mercantour, la Guadeloupe, la Réunion, la Guyane et les Calanques.

In this Bivouac Trekking you will adventure a new way to experience the nature, the connection with the mountains and the inherent spiritual character of hiking. We will walk through the first National Park of The Ecrins, a wild protected area plenty of animals and vegetation biodiversity.

The landscape is composed by steep and rocky faces peaks, exuberant alpine meadows, big mountains of 4000 mts. (12.000 ft.) and magnificent glaciers.

The Trekking begins in Mizoën, a cosy alpine village close of the big massif of The Ecrins. From there we will do a camp-to-camp trip, sleeping the first day into the wilderness, in a big plateau with one of the best panoramic views of the Alps, the following days in camp areas and the fifth day in the famous and charm refuge of the Glacier Blanc, from which many alpinists climb the highest mountain of the South of the Alps, the "Barre des Écrins" (4102 mts.). The last day we descend from the Refuge Glacier Blanc and we stay the last day in Ailefroide, "the capital of the Ecrins National Park" , full of mountaineers ready to climb any mountain.

TRIP PROGRAMME

DAY 1: MIZOËN - PLATEAU D'EMPARIS

The adventure starts near the Lake du Chambon, in the alpine village of Mizoën. From there we start climbing up gently, step by step, and getting higher. All day long we can admire the big Massif of Les Ecrins and the Valley of La Grave, the perfect spot to do mountaineering ski during winter time. Our journey ends in the big plateau of Emparis, where is settled a magic lake and where we set up our basecamp for tonight.

DAY 2: PLATEAU D'EMPARIS - CAMP. PONT D'ARSINE

During the morning we enjoy of the views during breakfast time. Today the itinerary goes downwards the mountain and once we arrive to La Grave, we will enjoy a typical alpine local food restaurant. After we just keep walking by the end of the valley up to the Camping Area of Arsine, just below the famous Col of Lautaret, where the "Tour of France" often pass every summer.

DAY 3: CAMP. PONT D'ARSINE - MONÊTIER

Today we start hiking up through the narrow valley of Arsine, plenty of magnificents mountains and impressive glaciers. Our goal is to climb up the Col D'Arsine (2340 m.) , the first alpine pass of the trek, to then descend following the GR-54 to Monêtiers-les-Bains, a small mountain village known to be a thermal water spot.

DAY 4: MONÊTIER - LES CLAUX

The fourth day we walk to the South, towards the Col de l'Eychauda (2431m.), the highest pass of the trekking. From there we can really enjoy of a gorgeous panoramic view of the Alps. Then we enter into the heart of the Ecrins National Park walking down the valley of Chambran. In the middle of the alpine meadows we spot some "alpine chalets", where the shepherd bring their flock during summer time.

DAY 5: LES CLAUX - REFUGE GLACIER BLANC

Today we hike by the valley of Ailefroide, a small alpine hamlet where the history of the alpinism started in the Ecrins in the 1848, when the summits became the new curiosity. We follow to the north this time, to reach the Refuge du Glacier Blanc (2542 m.), the highest point of the hiking trip, where also many alpinists sleep to climb the next morning the highest peak of the Ecrins, la Barre des Ecrins (4102 mts.).

DAY 6: REFUGE GLACIER BLANC - AILEFROIDE

After of a delightful alpine scenery, we say goodbye and we start getting back down to the valley. The last day we stay in the breathtaking camping area of Ailefroide, full of climbers coming from over the world.

Distance: 9 km + Ascent: 125 m↗︎ + Descent: 1100 m↘︎ Time 6 hours (includes stops)

DAY 7: AILEFROIDE - MIZOËN

After a nice breakfast, we set off the camp and we take the transfer back to Mizoen.

Accommodations - Bivouac Mode + Camping + Refuge

  • We've chosen the perfect spots to sleep in the outdoors. The areas where we sleep are designed "for bivouac" by the Ecrins National Park Requisites.
  • The first night we will set up our basecamp into the alpine grass. Very important: The client must bring everything needs.
  • Except the first day, the following days we set up our basecamp in the camping areas of Pont d'Arsine, Monêtier-Les Bains, Les Claux and Ailefroide.
  • The fifth day we sleep in the Refuge Glacier Blanc, very famous to be the perfect spot from where all alpine routes start.

Transport

  • Once we finish the hiking trip in Ailefroide, the next morning after breakfast, we take a transfer which will transport us to Mizoën again.

More information

  • You can spend around 500€ per person for meals, accommodations, transfer and other extra trip expenses.
  • A moderate experience in the mountains is required. Must be able to walk 8 hours and ascent 1000 mts of gain altitude per day.
  • Once you've done the Booking Payment Process, your Mountain Leader will send you all the information you need to know before and during the trip.
  • If a client or student does not present the required or agreed level, both technical and physical, the Guide Manager can vary, if it’s possible, the itinerary or program to adapt to the level of the participant. Likewise, the Guide Manager may vary depending of the weather conditions, in order to guarantee the safety.
  • The guide/client ratio will be kept prioritizing the security criteria and respecting the minimum number agreed by course or activity.
