7-DAY ROTA VICENTINA PORTUGAL TREK

ROTA VICENTINA - THE HISTORICAL WAY

7-DAY ROTA VICENTINA PORTUGAL TREK
7-DAY ROTA VICENTINA PORTUGAL TREK

"Nature, rural life and the mild climate, with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, make this region an unforgettable destination for lovers of sustainable tourism."

Lagos - San Vicente Cape - Carrapateira - Arrifana - Odeceixe

The Rota Vicentina runs in the southwest of an european country where culture and gastronomy merge with the ocean, that is Portugal. In the West, the Atlantic Ocean will always accompany us, with its idyllic sunsets; and in the East, valleys, rivers, historic villages and cork oak forests will find their way through ours.

We will walk 5 days through the Algarve region, which is distinguished from the rest of the Portuguese territory by housing a large number of microclimates and geological territories. The history of this territory evokes the unions with the cloudy Atlantic islands, the hot Maghreb, the bright Andalusia and the rest of the European continent.

The Rota Vicentina is made up of two roads: The Historical Way, which seeks to restore the old path used by pilgrims, travelers and citizens throughout the region; and the Fisherman's Way, which shows along the coast the importance of the main economic activity that has always sustained the locals: fishing.

We will do the “Historical Way”, which has been awarded by the European organization “Leading Quality Trails - Best of Europe”, with the E.R.A. certification - European Ramblers Association - as one of the best destinations for walking in Europe.

"The Natural Park of the Southwest Alentejano" and "Costa Vicentina" are the best preserved stretch of European coastline, with several species of unique fauna and flora. You can see here the rare ospreys, and also the white storks, as it is the only place in the world where they nest on the sea cliffs.

Nature, rural life and the mild climate, together with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, make this region an unforgettable destination for lovers of sustainable tourism.

It is also in the fall, when it is the ideal time to witness the migrations of seabirds that transit this area of Portugal year after year. We will pass through Vale Santo, a valley that was for hundreds of years part of the route of the pilgrims devoted to San Vicente, whose road ends and begins at the lighthouse where we started the Rota Vicentina.

DAY 3: THE PORTUGUESE BIODIVERSITY

Distance: 22 km. Gain Altitude: 200 m. Duration: 7 hours (includes stops)

In the second stage we will discover one of the richest biodiversity habitats in southwestern Portugal: temporary ponds, an essential means for amphibian reproduction. As we enter to the interior of Portugal, the vegetation changes. Along the riverbank are common ash, willows and Portuguese oaks; on the slopes of dry land, cork oaks, pines and olive trees; and in the undergrowth, white hawthorn, black jara and wild asparagus grow in abundance. The end of this day is characterized by a mix of landscapes where the ocean and the mountains get fusioned. A unique geological route, composed of cliffs, streams and highlands, which has been modeled over time due to a unique element: the water.

Distance: 12 km. Gain Altitude: 184 m. Duration: 5h. 30 min. (includes stops)

Today's destiny gives us history and gastronomy, and the fertile lands of Aljezur hide a sweet secret: the best sweet potatoes of Portugal. The Aljezur Sweet Potato Festival is organized every year at the beginning of December and is an ideal occasion to visit the region and walk through the Rota Vicentina. Around 1242, Aljezur was conquered by a gentleman loyal Paio Peres Correia, also known as Pelay Pérez, a notable Portuguese medieval conqueror who became a master of the Order of Santiago. The legend says that the victory of the conquest of the castle was partly due to the collaboration of the princess who betrayed her king...
